Publication excerpt:
SARAH BALL: Bartholomew; William, Sr. Sarah Ball, daughter of Bartholomew Ball and wife Elizabeth Henlen, was born 26 July 1754 in the Prince Frederick Winyaw Parish – Queensborough Township area *which roughly is the * Williamsburg-Florence-Marion Counties area of today. She married Hugh Giles 4 January 1772, and lived with her husband and children and died in Marion County. The date of her death is not known. 1 Hugh Giles was a member of a large family of that part of South Carolina and was an officer in the Revolutionary War, leaving the service with the rank of General. He petitioned for and was granted large tracts of land in Marion County. He was considered a wealthy and influential man of the district and certainly one of the districts’s most distinguished Revolutionary War heroes. In 1798, an Act of South Carolina General Assembly established judicial districts all over South Carolina and the Marion District included General Hugh Giles’ extensive land holdings. An eightmember commission was appointed to seek out a central location to pay taxes, vote and receive mail. A family by the name of Godbold donated the land, laid out the courthouse square and streets and named their town GILESBOROUGH in honor of General Hugh Giles. Gilesborough became the first and only seat of government for the Marion District, and when Marion County was formed from the district and so named, the city of Gilesborough voted to change its name to Marion also2. Sarah and Hugh Giles’ children were Ann, born 23 October 1773, died 3 August 1777; Hugh, Jr., born 20 September 1775; Sarah, born 23 January 1779, died November, 1799; Abraham, born 3 December 1781; Mary, born January 1786, died April, 1786; Edward, born 17 April 1788; James Thomas, born 26 March 1791; Robert, born 24 September 1794, died May 1867.3 REFERENCES 1.
