EDWARD BALL I: William Robert, Sampson, Bartholomew; William, Sr. Edward Ball, born in 1823 in Beaufort County, South Carolina, and raised in Randolph County Georgia and Barbour County, Alabama, married Harriet King in Randolph County in 1850. Edward had acquired land in Barbour County and was living on it with his sisters Louisa and Lavina by 1844. It was in 1844 also, at age 17, that Louisa Ball married John Washington Johnston, a neighbor. Lavina continued to live with Edward until she married a brother of Harriet King. Edward was not satisfied just to be a farmer and rancher and he soon became interested and involved in local civic and political affairs. By the time of the Civil War, he held the position of District Clerk of Court of Sout hern Alabama. When the Civil War reached Alabama, Edward enlisted in the 51st Alabama Regiment for the “duration of the war”. He had attained the rank of Colonel by the time he was killed by a gunshot during the battle of Bull Run. Edward was survived by his wife, Harriet King Ball, and four children: Edward II, Katie and two other children, whose names are unknown. Edward II was the only one of the four children to live out their lives as adults.
