SARAH VERONICA (EVERETT) BALL: The death of Dr. William Baker Ball in 1854 left Sarah a young widow with five children, the oldest only fifteen years of age. She inherited real estate valued at $2,000 and $10,000 in personal property, which included cash on hand. According to the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses of Sunflower County and Carroll Counties, Sarah was approximately 36 years old when Dr. Ball died. Sometime after the death of her husband in 1854, Sarah and her five children moved into the home of Turner C. Everett, a kinsman, and his family; but by the time of the 1860 census two of the children, Mary Adeline Ball and William Hines Ball, Sarah’s step-children, children of Dr. Ball and his first wife, Mary M. Hines, had married and started homes of their own1. The 1860 census of Carroll County, Mississippi, page 21, dwelling 174, family 164, Post Office, Carrollton, lists the household of Turner C. Everett which included Sarah with her three youngest children, Veronica, age 14, Few, age 12 and Eleanor, age 10. Sarah Veronica Ball owned real estate inherited from her husband valued at $2,000 and personal property valued at $8,000. 1870 --- There had been lots of changes since 1860. The Civil War had come and gone, the reconstruction period was just starting and with thousands of folks the reconstruction period was worse than the war. All was lost – homes, lands, money and, in too many cases, family. The well being and welfare of Sarah and her family in the aftermath of the war are unknown, her son, Few Ball, was the only one known to have fought in the war. The 1870 census of Carroll County, Mississippi, page 517, dwelling 12, family 12, Post Office, Vaiden, lists Sarah Ball, age 50, total value of assets $2,000, born in Georgia: Few Ball, age 23, farmer, born in Mississippi; Ellanora Ball, age 20, born in Mississippi. Sarah and her children are not living with the Turner C. Everetts anymore. She is listed as the head of the house on the census record. Veronica Ball had married and has a home of her own. Nothing further is known of Sarah Veronica Everett Ball. She may have re-married. She may have accompanied her two children, Few and Veronica, and their families to Arkansas, after 1876.
