SAMPSON BALL, Jr.: Sampson; William, Sr. The date and place of birth of Sampson Ball, Jr., is unknown, but the place of birth may have been St. Stephens Parish, Craven County, South Carolina. Nothing is known of Sampson, Jr. until his father’s death in 1753, at which time he inherited his father’s plantation of 500 acres, including 9 slaves, on the north side of the Santee River in St. Stephens Parish, Craven County. A MEMORANDUM of that part of the Estate of Sampson Ball, deceased, that is on the North side of the Santee River. Slaves listed: Cupid, Cittenburn, Celia, Cloe, Will, Orange, Hannah, Phillis and Celia. We the appraisers of that part of the Estate of Sampson Ball, deceased, that is on the North side of the Santee River, do certify that this is a just and true inventory of all the chattels shown to us by the executors. Proved, Recorded 12 April 1753. Appraisers: David Davis, Robert Carter, Emanuel Gums. 1 Sampson, Jr.’s grandfather, Lewis Gourdin, of St. James Santee Parish, Craven County, planter, died in 1754, one year after Sampson Ball, Sr. died. Sampson Ball, Jr. is listed as a minor under the age of 21 years in his grandfather’s will. LEWIS GOURDIN, Craven County, planter; Wife, Marian. Sons Peter, Theodore, William, land where I now live and land on Santee River Swamp, the dwelling plantation to son Theodore, part joining land lately sold to Mr. Theodore Gaillard to north on Mr. Allin’s land and south on Mr. Newman’s, 1 tract in St. James Santee Parish. Grandson; Sampson Ball, under 21 years. Granddaughter Marian Bousau, under 21 years. Executors, sons Peter and Theodore. Witness: Isaac Porcher, George Bagboy, Joseph Porcher. 2 Sampson Ball, Jr. died 7 August 1765 at his plantation is St. Stephens Parish, Craven County, South Carolina, a young man, unmarried and without issue. In his will, he divides his estate between his Gourdin and Dubose kinsmen on his mother’s side of the family. SAMPSON BALL, St. Stephens Parish, Craven County.
